B1, B2, C1: how your German level really shapes your job search

The single most common wasted application among internationals in Germany isn’t a skills mismatch — it’s a language mismatch that was visible in the posting all along, just not in a form anyone taught you to read.
The explicit signals
“Verhandlungssicheres Deutsch” means C1, sometimes C2 — negotiation-proof. “Fließend” usually means C1. “Gute Deutschkenntnisse” typically lands at B2. “Deutsch von Vorteil” (German is a plus) is the phrase that actually means optional. If a posting names a CEFR level directly, believe it: it came from a hiring manager’s checkbox and a screener will apply it mechanically.
The implicit signals
A posting written entirely in German for a role that could be done in English is itself a signal — the team works in German. A German title with an English body (“Softwareentwickler (m/w/d)” above English text) usually means an international team inside a German company: B1–B2 gets you through. Customer-facing words — Kundenkontakt, Beratung, Vertrieb — quietly raise the bar a full level above whatever is stated.
Where the market actually is
Tech roles in Berlin, and increasingly Munich and Hamburg, run English-first: perhaps a third of Berlin engineering postings require no German at all. Finance, insurance, healthcare, the public sector and most of the Mittelstand remain solidly German-first. Remote roles at German companies are the trap: the work may be in English, but standups, HR and the works council often aren’t — check before you invest an evening.
Play it as a strategy, not a grievance
If you’re at B1 heading for B2: filter hard now, apply to the English-first third, and let your improving German expand the funnel every few months. Re-checking previously-dismissed jobs as your level rises is exactly the kind of mechanical work software should do for you.
